Surgical Oncology is a comprehensive professional course designed to provide healthcare professionals with a strong foundation in the principles, practice, and multidisciplinary role of surgery in cancer management.
The course explores the role of surgery across the cancer continuum, from preoperative assessment and diagnostic procedures to definitive cancer surgery, lymph-node assessment, reconstruction, postoperative care, complications, rehabilitation, and survivorship. Learners will develop an understanding of how surgical decisions are influenced by tumor biology, anatomical location, disease stage, patient fitness, comorbidities, imaging, histopathology, molecular characteristics, and multidisciplinary treatment planning.
Key areas include oncologic surgical principles, biopsy procedures, tumor resection, margins, lymph-node surgery, sentinel lymph-node biopsy, staging procedures, cytoreductive and palliative surgery, minimally invasive techniques, reconstructive surgery, perioperative oncology, surgical complications, and enhanced recovery principles.
The course also examines the integration of surgery with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, endocrine therapy, and other systemic treatments, including the growing role of neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment strategies.
Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the multidisciplinary oncology team and the responsibilities of nurses and other healthcare professionals in preoperative preparation, postoperative monitoring, pain and symptom management, wound care, nutrition, infection prevention, patient education, rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and early recognition of surgical complications.
